White Oak Losing Bark

In the past, I have asked you about bark falling off white oak. Abby Hash, District Forester, reported

falling white oak bark in Harrison County. The photos she provided have dark areas in and under

the bark plates. I thought it could be Hypoxylon Canker, viewing at a distance. Also, at a distance,

the trees in the photos looked like shagbark hickory or bur oak.

Zooming in to view the dark areas, the areas are brown and not the black or gray flat surface that

Hypoxylon Canker creates.

In photo 1 the tree in the foreground has an area with smooth brown patches on the bark. I don’t

believe they are Hypoxylon canker. Zooming in, I see vertical bark cracks, indicating a canker.

The tree in the background also has bark crack and callus tissue. And from another closeup photo

of the dark bark plate area, I see bark surface of a canker face. Not sure which canker fungus could

be involved or if any insects are tunneling under the bark. This appears to be the reason for the bark

falling off.
